Ratina Shopping Centre: A Modern Landmark and Tampere’s Urban Heart
Opened on April 19, 2018, Ratina Shopping Centre is not just Tampere's largest retail destination; it is a monumental achievement in urban development and a symbol of the city's dynamic future. With a staggering 53,000 square meters of prime retail space, Ratina stands proudly in the absolute heart of the city, on the scenic shore of the Ratina bay. This architectural marvel was the largest real estate development project in the history of its owner, Sponda Oyj, representing a massive investment of approximately €250 million. The project's scale was unprecedented for the region, involving the purchase of a 24,000-square-meter plot from the City of Tampere—the largest land transaction in the city's history. The result is a vibrant, multi-faceted urban hub that has redefined the commercial and social landscape of Tampere.
The centre’s strategic location is unparalleled. It is ingeniously built between the iconic Ratina Stadium and the bustling Tampere Bus Station, creating a seamless nexus of transport, entertainment, and commerce. An underground connection and direct escalators link the shopping centre to the bus station, making it effortlessly accessible to the thousands of commuters who pass through the area daily. Furthermore, it is just a five-minute walk from the Tampere railway station and the state-of-the-art Nokia Arena, placing it at the epicenter of the city's activity. This prime positioning ensures a constant flow of visitors, from local residents and students to business travelers and international tourists, all drawn to Ratina’s comprehensive offerings and vibrant atmosphere.
A Masterpiece of Architecture and Integration
The architectural vision for Ratina, brought to life by Jussi Murole and Tuomo Siitonen, is a complex of three distinct yet interconnected buildings. The main, newly constructed Ratina building is the commercial core, while two beautifully restored historic properties, Ranta-Ratina and Ratinan Kulma, add a layer of historical depth and character. Ranta-Ratina is housed in the former Autotuonti property, and Ratinan Kulma revitalizes the former Vuoltsu premises. This thoughtful blend of the new and the old respects the area's heritage while providing a cutting-edge environment for modern commerce. The entire complex is a testament to sophisticated urban planning, transforming a former bus station pier into a thriving destination.
Inside, Ratina is a world of its own. It hosts over 140 businesses spread across seven floors, offering an unparalleled selection of fashion, groceries, interior design, wellness, and leisure services. The centre is anchored by seven major tenants and features a diverse mix of international brands, beloved Finnish retailers, and unique local boutiques. The culinary scene is equally impressive, with more than 20 cafés and restaurants catering to every palate, from quick bites at Jungle Juice Bar to authentic Italian pizza at Via Tribunali. The centre is designed for convenience and comfort, featuring the largest and most modern parking garage in central Tampere with over 1,200 spaces, complete with a sophisticated license plate recognition system operated by Finnpark.
A Commitment to Experience and Community
Ratina is more than a place to shop; it is a community hub designed for everyone. We are particularly proud of our family-friendly amenities, including two dedicated baby care rooms, a Moomin-themed Taika nursery and breastfeeding room, and the imaginative Mini-Ratina, a children’s play area designed as a miniature city. Our commitment to accessibility is evident in our wide walkways, numerous lifts, and accessible facilities, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors with disabilities or prams. Services like free Wi-Fi, Posti Parcel Lockers, a comprehensive recycling point, and a helpful information desk make daily life easier for our customers.
The operational backbone of this massive facility is what makes the seamless visitor experience possible. From the advanced HVAC systems that maintain a perfect climate to the intricate network of electrical and plumbing systems that serve over a hundred businesses, the technical infrastructure of Ratina is a city within a city. The safety and security of our 11 million annual visitors are paramount, ensured by a dedicated team and state-of-the-art fire safety and surveillance systems. The logistics of receiving and distributing goods for 140 retailers, managing waste for a facility of this scale, and maintaining the pristine condition of every corner of the 53,800-square-meter space requires a team of highly skilled and dedicated tradespeople. It is this team that forms the foundation of Ratina’s success.
